Ellie 2.0 Radio – July 10, 2021
It’s an Ellie’s Talking Head Show! We start with our featured idealist, Lauren Underwood, a second-term congresswoman who represents Illinois’s 14th District who at 32 was the youngest black woman ever elected to Congress. Her political trajectory was unusual—she started as an RN focusing on health care policy but became politically motivated when the ACA was at risk. She’s also the co-founder of the Black Maternal Health Caucus which focuses on improving health outcomes for pregnant women of color and their children. In the show’s second segment, I talk about the dismal statistics around maternal mortality for women of color in America and how the U.S. in general has the worst maternal/infant mortality rate of any developed country (our rate is six times higher than that of Norway or New Zealand). From there I share stores of compassion about a judge who gave a convicted felon a second chance and how the team members of an Alabama Waffle House ensured that one of their colleagues could attend his high school graduation. Finally, in my C-Block, I share about getting my new golden retriever puppy, Jack the dog!
